Suspect In Custody Following Underground Explosion Near Port Authority Bus Terminal

UPI, December 11, 2017 — An explosion in a subway near New York City’s Port Authority during the Monday morning commute injured at least one person and put a suspect in custody, authorities said.

The explosion occurred in the area of 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

New York City police said a man with “wires coming out of him” was arrested in the subway, WPIX-TV reported. Police later said a pipe bomb is suspected.

Fire officials said a call reporting the blast was received at 7:19 a.m. CBS New York reported two injuries — one to a bystander and the suspect. The extent of the injuries was not initially clear.

The incident complicated New York’s busy morning rush hour traffic. The nearby subways in the area were evacuated and the trains began bypassing the nearby Times Square station.
