Asharq Al-Awsat , June 11, 2010 – An Assassination plot targeting Iraqiya leader Dr. Ayad Allawi was revealed. Security sources informed Asharq Al-Awsat a precise foreign-backed assassination plan was discovered that was supposed to be carried out shortly before formation of the government. This plan was foiled based on the received intelligence from neighboring Arab countries. The validity of this information was confirmed by the United States.
Senior Iraqi and Arab security officials revealed internal parties, backed by foreign support, were involved in this plan.

A security source close to Allawi described this information as top secret and said they had received precise and reliable intelligence regarding the terror plot intended for Iraqiya’s leader. He added Allawi has been the target of 13 assassination attempts in the past, and intense security measures have currently been undertaken for his security.
