Xinhua World News, Oct 15, 2008 (excerpts) – Argentina’s chief prosecutor Wednesday passed a demand for an embargo against Iran for damages caused by an explosion which killed 85 people in Buenos Aires in 1994.

General Prosecutor Alberto Nisman accepted the demand of a survivor of the attack, who also claimed a compensation of 1 million U.S. dollars.

The survivor, whose name was not given, suffered serious injures during the attack, the worst ever on Argentine soil.

The 1994 attack on a Jewish cultural center was orchestrated by former leaders of the Iranian government and was carried out by the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, according to the survivor, whose claim was presented by a lawyer through the social organization Active Memory.

The final decision must be taken by federal judge Rodolfo Canicoba Corral, who is in charge of the case, Nisman said.

In November 2005, Nisman said investigators believed that a 21-year-old Hezbollah militant was the suicide bomber of the attack on the seven-story Jewish center, which used to be the symbol of a Jewish population numbering more than 200,000.
