The Greek Coast Guard reported at least 28 asylum seekers, including one child, drowned in an incident on Sunday.
This incident took place at a time when a boat carrying around 100 asylum seekers capsized near a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, reports indicate. A number of the asylum seekers were saved before drowning, while a number of others were able to swim ashore.
In 2015 alone at least 2,400 asylum seekers have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, the United Nations says.
