Washington removes People’s Mojahedin from terrorist list

Al-Dustoor, 30 Sep 2012 – The US State Department announced in a statement on Friday it has removed the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran from the terrorist organization black list.
The Secretary of State decided, according to the law, to remove the PMOI and its affiliates from the List of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, the State Department said.
This decision confirms the nearly completed process of evacuating Camp Ashraf requested by the United Nations and the US. This Iranian dissident organization has been present in this camp in Iraq for years. In Paris, this organization welcomed the US decision.
“I understand that this decision was difficult and required political courage. This has been the correct decision, albeit long overdue, in order to remove a major obstacle in the path of the Iranian people’s efforts for democracy,” said Maryam Rajavi, “President-elect of the National Council of Resistance for the period of transition of sovereignty to Iranian people” in her statement.
“In the days and months ahead, we hope to better introduce ourselves and our goals to international community and the American people,” Rajavi hoped.
“We propose a non-nuclear Iran, peace, security, democracy, human rights, stability, construction, friendship, and economic development in this region of the world as well as respect for international laws and conventions,” she stressed.
“We are seeking change in Iran by the Iranian people and their just resistance. We want the sovereignty of the people and a free election,” she added.
This decision was expected because this organization had set violence aside long ago and fully cooperated with US intelligence services in order to increase their information on events inside Iran.
However, the US State Department stressed in its statement it will never forgive or forget its past terrorist measures, including their involvement in the murder of American citizens in Iran in the 1970s and attacks on US soil in 1992.
