Radio Deutsche Welle, August 10, 2012 – A number of United Nations advisors issued a statement warning about dire conditions in Camp Liberty and requested international community intervention to avert new violence in this camp.
“We call for immediate intervention of the UN Secretary General, the US Secretary Hilary Clinton and the international community to prevent another humanitarian disaster,” AFP reported citing the statement issued by the UN Human Rights Council consultants.
In this statement written by ten human rights experts concerns were expressed on the involuntary closure of Camp Ashraf. 1200 members of the People’s Mojahedin remain in this camp despite UN efforts and mediation for their transfer to a new location.
The evacuation of Camp Ashraf and transfer to Camp Liberty (al-Hurriya) began based on an agreement signed around eight months ago between the UN and the Iraqi government. However, about three months ago and following the transfer of nearly 2,000 of them, the remaining residents of Camp Ashraf numbering to about 1200 refused to transfer to the new location.
The PMOI say the Iraqi government has not remained loyal to the agreements and on the other hand, Camp al-Hurriya is deprived of the most basic living necessities, such as water and electricity. However, the US State Department and UN envoy have described as baseless the PMOI’s claims on the bad conditions and lack of facilities in Camp al-Hurriya.
Camp Ashraf
The Iraqi government had assigned a July 20 deadline for the complete evacuation of Camp Ashraf, announcing if they refuse to leave Camp Ashraf they will be taken out by force. Now the Iraqi government is on the verge taking action based on these remarks.
National security advisor Faleh Fayaz said Iraq will take “measures towards its lawful and legitimate responsibilities to enforce Iraq’s sovereignty on Camp Ashraf”. He was quoted as saying Iraq “will force out Iran dissident group”.
US government and efforts to relocate PMOI
On July 26th of this year the UN refugee agency called for “cooperation, patience and understanding” on the dispute over the PMOI in Iraq. At the beginning of this month, US lawmakers spoke of extremely dismal conditions in both camps Liberty and Ashraf, comparing Camp Liberty to the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz.
The State Department Counterterrorism Coordinator Daniel Benjamin in early July advised the PMOI to fully vacate Camp Ashraf as soon as possible. In a press briefing in Baghdad, Daniel Benjamin said Iraqi government patience is wearing thin and the PMOI must accept that no longer can reside in Camp Ashraf. He also warned the PMOI’s insistence in this regard is “irresponsible and dangerous”.
The PMOI has been on the US terror black list since 1997. This organization has been trying to delist by relying on distancing from violence in recent years.
