United States urges Iraq to step up security at camp holding Iranian dissidents

Barrage of rockets crashed in and around the camp of the People’s Mujahideen Organisation of Iran (PMOI) next to Baghdad global Airport on Thursday, killing 23 members, a Paris-based spokesman said.
Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the influential House Foreign Affairs Committee, also condemned the attack, saying, “With growing Iranian involvement in Iraq, the security situation around Camp Liberty is increasingly risky”.
US Secretary of State, John Kerry, made a statement yesterday condemning the “brutal, senseless terrorist attack on [Camp Liberty] that killed and injured camp residents”.
The group has been formally exiled in Camp Liberty, a former United States military base, since 2012 after their forcible relocation from Camp Ashraf, which had served as their previous home from 1986.
By dispatching Intelligence Ministry agents to Camp Liberty in recent months, the clerical regime got involved in preparation for yet another crime against which the Iranian Resistance repeatedly raised alarm in dozens of letters, statements, meetings and telephone calls to United Nations and U.S. officials. In the years following the Iranian Revolution and downfall of the Shah, MEK was the principal opposition to the rising Iranian clerics.
“This is a most deplorable act, and I am greatly concerned at the harm that has been inflicted on those living at Camp Liberty.” the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said.
The State Department, through its Senior Advisor for MEK Resettlement, will remain actively engaged in the worldwide effort to relocate the residents of Camp Hurriya to safe, permanent locations as soon as possible, statement from Secretary Kerry said.
