The Iraqi Christian Democratic Party issued a call to the United Nations demanding this organization prevent Camp Liberty from being turned into a prison for Ashraf residents.
Excerpts of this statement are as follows:
“News of the first day of this relocation indicates this site lacks infrastructure services such as water and electricity and the residents are being treated as prisoners, not refugees.
Our party has followed up on this humanitarian issue from long ago. We commemorate the flexibility shown by the residents in transferring from a place where they have lived for more than two decades and we call on the UNHCR to begin the refugee status determination process immediately and without any more delays, coincidently in Camp Liberty and in Camp Ashraf, before the newly announced deadline by the Iraqi government.”
