Prominent Canadian Human Rights activist: U.S. is responsible for Ashraf protection

68th day of the Ashraf resident’ families’ sit-in in the US was held in front of the White House in Washington at freezing temperature along with snow and blizzard with participation of Iranians from Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, California, Florida , and Canada.

The speaker of this sit-in was Dr. David Kilgore, former deputy of Canadian Parliament and Director General of Africa-Asia department of Canadian Foreign Ministry in the previous Liberal Government. He underscored that protection of Ashraf residents is the responsibility of the US government according to international conventions and law in order to prevent a human catastrophe.

Referring to the UN Secretary General’s concern regarding security and protection of Ashraf residents and his report to the Security Council, David Kilgore said: We met the bureau of UN High Commissioner for Refugees and emphasized that they announce Ashraf residents as members of a protected society. The present extraordinary situation makes this measure obligatory for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Dr. Kilgore described the root of this problem and assessed it as the result of the appeasement policy of a number of European and American countries by terrorist designation of the PMOI. He added: “Fortunately, the British Court of Appeal and recently the European Supreme Court, after hearing secret and non-secret evidence, annulled this unjust designation and both British Houses ruled to de-proscription of the PMOI. “
