PMOI reports assault on its disarmed members in Camp Ashraf by Iraqi forces, VOA

VOA – 17 January 2011
Anchorman: The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, an opposition organization in Camp Ashraf located in Diyala Province of Iraq, reports its disarmed members being beaten by Iraqi forces. The Iraqi government is looking to expel the PMOI members from this country.
Report – Ali Javanmardi: PMOI members report a recent attack by Iraqi military and police forces against residents of Camp Ashraf, leading to 176 residents being injured during the raid. The Baghdad-based Azzaman daily under a large title announced the Iranian Embassy and Quds Corps forces as the orchestrators of this assault against Ashraf residents. Baghdad and the Islamic Republic of Iran have had no comment on the claims of this newspaper.
“These attacks have increased during recent weeks,” said Shahriar Kiamanesh, a resident of Ashraf, to VOA. “On January 7th, these thugs attacked Ashraf residents with stones, sticks and especially with Molotov cocktails leaving 176 PMOI members in Ashraf – 91 of whom were women – injured and a number of them continue to suffer from their wounds.”
On this same issue, Diyala Province Governor Abdul-Nasser Mohammad al-Mahdavi in response to a question raised by the VOA’s Farsi segment regarding the reason behind the attack against Camp Ashraf’s disarmed residents said, “We are coexisting with the PMOI and Camp Ashraf residents. The events that have taken place have nothing to do with Diyala Governorate and are related to orders issued by the government in Baghdad. From our point of view this subject is a human rights matter.”
Shahriar Kiamanesh speaks of the installation of loudspeakers around the camp and the fact that this measure is carried out to impose psychological torture on the camp’s residents.
Shahriar Kiamanesh: “180 loudspeakers with full assistance provided by the Iraqi forces were installed to be used 24 hours a day to blare their threats against Ashraf residents. For example, threats to burn down [the camp], hang Ashraf residents, and these threats are continuing. At sometimes very repulsive insults are expressed against Ashraf residents.”
However, Diyala Governor Abdul-Nosser Mohammad al-Mahdavi says he is uninformed of the existence of such loudspeakers. 24 years after Camp Ashraf was built, tension regarding the presence of members of the most hardline opponents of the Islamic Republic in Iraqi soil has risen. It is worth noting that the US continues to maintain the PMOI in the list of foreign terrorist organizations, although the PMOI is fiercely attempting to use legal channels to have its name delisted.
