Pax Christi Australia raises concerns of Ashraf residents and those moved to Camp Liberty

Father Claude Mostowik MSC of Pax Christi Australia issued a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressing his deepest concerns on the fate of Ashraf residents, especially those recently moved to Camp Liberty.
This letter is as follows:

Pax Christi, Australia, which is part of the International Christian Movement for Peace, Pax Christi International, with UN observer status has written to you on numerous occasion at our concern for the 3,400 Iranian residents of Ashraf City, Diyala Province, Iraq, and in particular the people who have been to moved Camp Liberty. We continue to insist that ‘International law requires that they must be able to benefit from basic protection of their security and well-being’.
We have in the past urged you to use your good offices so that your agency and UNAMI station a team to monitor daily events in Ashraf and Camp Liberty to ensure protection of the residents and ensure that their living conditions meet basic human standards.
The January 31 statement by UNAMI indicated that ‘the infrastructure and facilities at Camp Liberty are in accordance with the international humanitarian standards stipulated in the MoU.’ This does not appear to be the case. Following the recent arrival of 397 Ashraf residents at Camp Liberty it is clear from photos received that the camp not only fails to meet human rights standards for security and protection but the infrastructure falls short of humanitarian standards. Photos can be supplied on request.

1. Shortage of water and broken-down water supply network.
2. Half of the camp lacks any electricity.
3. The camp’s conditions are unhygienic as the area is contaminated and septic systems are unable to be easily emptied.
4. The majority of restrooms are broken and thus unusable

Pax Christi Australia has also written to you about the human rights situation in both Camp Ashraf and now Camp Liberty.
The people are under constant surveillance and have little privacy due to the heavy presence of the police inside the camp. The presence of police outside the camp has also been acknowledged. The residents of Camp Liberty continue to endue surveillance and intimidation by powerful cameras to monitor all activity; breach of privacy, harassment by armed police within the camp – even in their ordinary movements to the dining room; and infringement of personal privacy especially that of the women.
It is distressing to observe how UNAMI and Mr. Martin Kobler himself, the Special Representative of UN Secretary-General, appear to participate in this prison-like environment. It is unacceptable that these people continue to be punished by neglect of their human rights and placing them in conditions that do not meet humanitarian needs.
