Call to station permanent UN team to guarantee Ashraf residents’ protection
Annul Ashraf siege, end psychological torture through 300 loudspeakers
Conference held by Regional Network for Development of Democracy and Human Rights
Cairo – December 2011
The signing of a statement in support of Ashraf residents’ rights was announced in a conference held in Cairo at the invitation of the Regional Network for Development of Democracy and Human Rights. This body, consisting of numerous civil society and human rights organs, announced the result of a widespread campaign gathering signatures from 12,300 MPs and dignitaries along with 330 organizations and parties from 14 Arabic countries. This conference was held with dozens of Egyptian and Middle Eastern intellectuals and activists taking part.
The participants in this conference and the signatories of this statement condemned the Iraqi forces’ July 2009 and April 2011 attacks against Camp Ashraf, reiterating it has been over two years since Iraqi forces have been psychologically torturing Ashraf residents through 300 loudspeakers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This statement added Iraqi forces have also imposed inhumane restrictions against the residents, especially on medical services, which has resulted in 12 patients from Ashraf losing their lives in the past months.
The conference resolution urged Baroness Ashton, the European Union and its Member States, and also the US government and United Nations to compel the Iraqi government to end its conduct towards Ashraf residents and recognize their rights based on international laws and conventions. This resolution further calls on the UN, Security Council and Arab League to station a permanent monitoring team in Ashraf to guarantee the residents’ protection until their transfer to third countries.
