The National Association of Non-Governmental Organizations, stationed in Zimbabwe with United Nations advisory status, issued a call to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanding measures to be taken for Iraqi security forces stationed outside of Camp Liberty.
Excerpts of this letter are as follows:
We would like to express our worries that the Iraqi-UNAMI Memorandum of Understanding is being misused by the Iranian government to imprison its opponents. For removing any suspicion about the intention of imprisoning the residents of Ashraf, we request that the following points to be taken into consideration:
– Any agreement and any other operations related to Ashraf Camp must have the consent of the residents of Ashraf and they must participate in any discussions that have an effect to their wellbeing;
– The residents must be able to take along their own moveable assets to the new location without any restriction;
– Particularly for the safety and privacy of the nearly 1,000 Muslim women, the Iraqi forces must remain outside the fenced area of the new camp. Their presence inside the new camp is totally unacceptable. The benchmark for the Iraqi sovereignty is to control who enters and exit the Ashraf Camp.
– The residents’ right to their private property’s ownership must be entirely respected and any infringement on this matter is a clear breach of the international law.
