On Thursday July 5, the plainclothes once again prevented entry of truck carrying food to Liberty on the order of criminal officer, Sadeq Mohammad Kazem . He said the 25-ton shipment must be spread on the ground at police checkpoint and reloaded and transferred to camp after being fully inspected and checked. This is while the police had told UNAMI they could inspect the shipment inside the truck. This shipment has been checked three times by police dogs, scanners and sonars.
The shipment contains flour, rice, lentils, peas, dried fruits, sugar, cooking oil and biscuits and it is worth $70,000. Its unloading on the ground and reloading in 55 Celsius heat would have irreversible damages.
Yesterday the plainclothes also prevented the entry of a small truck of plants and flowers to the camp. Sadeq has told UNAMI monitors that no plant was allowed in the camp.
Georges Bakoos, Iraqi Prime Minister’s political adviser and Ashraf committee deputy said on May 31 in the presence of the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) in Camp Liberty management meeting that the entry of plants whose heights are less than 150 cm is allowed. All plants in the shipment that was denied entry yesterday were less than 150 cm high. The SRSG had recognized in various letters to the residents their right for recreational facilities and green space.
At the beginning of June, the same plainclothes kept fresh food such as vegetables and fruits for ten days at the entrance and only allowed them in after a large amount was rotten.
The Iranian resistance emphasizes that suppressive and arbitrary measures of the Iraqi government against Liberty residents are systematic and clear violation of the MoU. According to MoU, Iraq ensures that Liberty “meets humanitarian and human rights standards” and facilitates the “provision of life support”.
