Iraqi forces enforce deliberate delays preventing cancer patients’ transfer to hospital to undergo surgery and necessary treatment

Iraqi Prime Ministry agents in Camp Liberty have in the past few days unprecedentedly escalated their limitations and repressive measures against Liberty residents, especially obstructing the timely transfer of patients to hospitals.
1. On Sunday, August 10th, as a result of stonewalling by the criminal Major Ahmed Khozeir – one of the main elements behind three massacres in Ashraf – four patients heading to Baghdad for radiotherapy and medical exams were not able to go to the hospital and meet their appointments for treatment.
2. On Saturday, August 9th, a criminal element of the Iraqi Prime Ministry, under the command of Major Ahmed Khozeir, at the camp entrance began harassing patients heading for a hospital. He deliberately delayed them and prevented some of them from reaching the hospital on time to go through with their medical appointments. This Iraqi Prime Ministry element forced the patients out of the ambulance and kept them standing in the sunshine for 1 ½ hours, insulting them. He also took the patients’ mobile phones, erased all the information and phone numbers in it and delayed their exit from the camp for 2 ½ hours. Therefore, three of the patients who had to be hospitalized to undergo surgery missed their appointments and returned to Liberty without getting any result. Their appointment was then postponed to two months later.
3. For no reason at all Iraqi Prime Ministry agents on this day also prevented the transfer of 5 other patients who were to be transferred to a hospital.
4. On Friday, August 8th, in yet another inhumane measure an individual by the name of Mohamed of the Iraqi Prime Ministry began insulting a cancer patient and his nurse at the camp entrance while they were returning from the hospital. Under the pretext of conducting his inspections, he took all of the patients’ medication and spilled it on the ground, tore apart the doctor’s notes and told the patient he has no right to purchase medicine and bring it into the camp.
5. This very agent in another hostile act has for no reason at all prevented the delivery of ‘cleaner’ into the camp during the past week. This substance is necessary for the filters of the water purification plant inside the camp. Preventing the delivery of this substance leaves the residents facing major problems in purifying water. During the past few days there have been major shortages in drinking water in the camp. From the very beginning Camp Liberty lacked any basic facilities to provide water. At their own expense the residents spent $2.5 million to build a water purification plant inside the camp in 2012.
6. During the past few days in yet another hostile act of conspiracy, Iraqi forces have taken the residents’ mobile phones before exiting the camp to go to hospitals or carry out utility activities. They confiscate the SIM cards or erase all of the information.
These criminal measures by elements linked to the Prime Ministry, especially intensifying the medical siege against the residents, are considered physical and psychological torture and crimes against humanity and those in charge must be investigated and prosecuted. To this day 20 residents have suffered to death due to the criminal medical blockade.
Considering the written commitments provided by the US government and UN regarding Liberty residents’ safety and security, the Iranian Resistance calls for their urgent intervention to end this criminal blockade and provision of the basic security and humanitarian needs in Liberty.
