While the temperatures soar to 56 C (an scorching 133 F) at Camp Liberty, the wait time for access to the only source of water for the Camp- an already 12 kilometers away- has increased to 9 hours. This dangerously grave situation resulted after the security forces attached to the Baghdad airport were deployed at the Camp.
One immediately detrimental consequence has been increased wait time for the 36000-litre tankers which transport water to the camp. The wait line is now some 32 tankers long. Tankers which left in the time window, 9:00 – 10:00 in the morning, from the camp last Wednesday, returned only between 18:30 – 19:00 in the evening. The number of tankers delivering water to the camp has since dropped from 36 to 24 tankers (a reduction of one-third (33%) in the water capacity for the residents of the camp).
The Iraqi command responsible for the camp continues to propagate its false claim that it will guarantee adequate water for the residents of the camp, but couple the above shortage of the water to the unbearable heat and extremely close quarters, and a perfect recipe for a massive humanitarian crisis is in the making. In the last 130 days, there has been either shortage (or an entire absence) of this most basic commodity. The Iraqi command would like everyone to believe that water is being provided as a service to the residents, but the truth is that the Camp residents have so far paid more than $110,000 for the commodity and delivery charges.
The special representative of Secretary General (SRSG) and the Iraqis had promises connectivity to the municipal water system for the camp. No action has yet been taken. On May 31, George Bakos, al-Maleki’s political adviser and deputy of Iraqi Prime Ministerial Committee in charge of suppression of the residents, stated that the connectivity will commence on the first of the holy month of Ramadan- another 20 days away. This gives further lie to the Iraqi intentions and adding to their record of lies.
The ’plain-clothed’ Iraqi agents, on orders from the Prime Minister’s office, have refused delivery of basic food items to the Camp for a continuous 6 days, and now appear to have decided to compound the misery for the residents by inciting a humanitarian crisis.
