MEK- Iraq: EU Official Laud Iranian Resistance Leader For Courage After 4 Rocket Attack On Camp Ashraf

OfficialWire, Brussels, 12 Dec 2011 – President of EU Parliament’s Iraq delegation welcomed “courageous and constructive statement by Iranian resistance leader Maryam Rajavi”, describing it as “a vital breakthrough towards a peaceful future for the residents of Camp Ashraf.”
MEP Struan Stevenson, President of European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Iraq, welcomed the “intense and well-conducted” international efforts that have lead to an agreement on Camp Ashraf.
“I am enormously grateful for the sincere goodwill of Mrs. Rajavi when she once again emphatically urged Ashraf residents to count on and trust the international community’s assurances for their safety and security. Her skillful leadership and brave choice has once again averted a humanitarian tragedy that the Mullahs in Tehran had long planned to occur on New Year’s Eve.” was stressed by Mr. Stevenson.
In his press statement, the EU official highlighted “the untiring resolve and commitment of the Special Representative of the UNAMI- Ambassador Martin Kobler”, while commending “assurances given by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton”; highlighting constructive efforts of Baroness Ashton and her Special Advisor on Camp Ashraf – Jean De Ruyt; Ambassador Daniel Fried and High Commissioner Antonio Guterres.
The recent consecutive rocket attacks on the residents of the camp have been condemned in the statement as “the inability of the Iraqi authorities to honour their commitments after signing the MoU with the UN in respect of security at Camp Ashraf “. The statement adds: “during the past few days, Iraq has repeatedly failed to prevent missiles being fired at Ashraf from a near distance, despite it being in an area where Iraqi forces are patrolling day and night.
“These repeated acts of blatant terrorism, make a mockery of complaints about Ashraf being a threat to Iraq ‘s sovereignty, when in reality it is the sovereignty of the Iranian regime that seems to be dominating Iraq “.
This has been termed as “Breach of Terms” by the Iranian opposition statements issued from Paris. On Thursday, December 28, the Resistance issued a statement reporting that the residents had raised the fourth 107mm rocket attack on the Camp with the UNAMI Representative – Martin Kobler; the U.S. embassy envoy Daniel Fried and the Iraqi government as a serious breach of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed.
Reportedly, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards’ terrorist Quds Force has ordered forces under it command, the so-called “Asa’eb Al-Haq,” to halt the planned attack for Thursday “until further notice.”
In previous statements issued following 3 rounds of rocket attacks on the camp, the resistance emphatically emboldened that “they had informed the counterparts “engaged in the MoU.
They warned the International Community of Tehran’s objective to “sabotage” a peaceful settlement of the crisis and preparing grounds for a forcible relocation and a huge massacre in Ashraf.
On 28 December, an official of Iraqi security’s center of command in Baquba had been quoted by the press to have stated “four mortar rounds hit camp Ashraf at about 2015 hours.”   The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq, however, failed to verify this report despite its mandate that would allow its visit to the Camp, and indicated that it was not in a position to independently verify those reports.
In the midst of the attacks, the resistance leader in Paris, Mrs. Rajavi, declared in a statement that “400 residents of Ashraf were prepared to go to camp Liberty with their belongings and vehicles as a sign of goodwill gesture”.
The same good will gesture is needed by US and EU member States to display the will and obligation in “deeds” that would fulfill a peaceful resolve of what can still evolve into a terrible Humanitarian Crisis along the path.
