Baghdad daily, 12 Nov 2012 – Iraqi MP Dr. Jamal Al-Kilani from the Iraqiya Coalition called for Camp Liberty to be transferred into a camp for political refugees in order to be able to visit its residents and become informed directly of their status.
“We in the Parliament are interested in everyone residing in this country, Iraqi or non-Iraqi, in order to have them protected under the framework of adopted laws in Iraq emphasized by the 4th Geneva Convention in relation to human rights. Therefore, we will be able to provide hygiene conditions to protect their lives and dignity,” he said.
“Iran’s interference in the issue of the People’s Mojahedin in Iraq is a flagrant and negative intervention, and this is one of the reasons for their expulsion from their camp in Ashraf located in Diyala. I consider this meddling as a war in which we must prevail,” Al-Kilani added.
“In any country in this world refugees must be treated according to human rights standards in order to not violate their rights. However, the government is not implementing international conventions and covenants regarding protection of the PMOI in Iraq,” Al-Kilani said.
“The media must be independent and distanced from political pressures in order to portray the truth as it is. Whoever prevents the media to portray the truth doesn’t want anyone to be informed of this situation,” he added.
“We demand Liberty’s gates to be opened to all media outlets and journalists to portray the truth to the world as they actually are,” Al-Kilani added.
“Camp Liberty seriously suffers from infrastructure shortages and many human rights violations are being imposed in this camp. We will not allow human rights violations continue in Liberty. Therefore, the infrastructure must be completed and all problems in contrast to the PMOI’s freedom in this location must be resolved. All necessities to protect their freedom and dignity must be provided for,” he continued.
