The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies wrote a letter to Ad Melkert, Special Representative of UN Secretary General in Iraq condemning Tehran-affiliated forces’ attack against Ashraf residents, demanding the lifting of the siege imposed on Ashraf and the guarantee of the residents’ protection. This institution holds advisory ranking to the UN Economic and Social Council.
This letter partly reads: We express our deep concern regarding the current conditions of Iranian dissidents residing in Camp Ashraf in Diyala Province, Iraq and demand the following:
Iraqi forces to evacuate Camp Ashraf; quick logistical support by UNAMI forces to ensure the residents’ protection and prevent possible human rights violations that might occur later on;
US forces to abide by their obligations according to the International Humanitarian Law and 4th Geneva Convention and safeguard the right to life and prosperity of Camp Ashraf residents to be provided and protected;
Immediate lifting of the siege imposed on the camp and guaranteeing the right to reside for access to medical supplies and services including fundamental therapeutic treatment; and ensuring the protection of their residence vis-à-vis attempts to have them extradited to Iran where there is deep concern they will face prosecution.
