Jordan’s Human Rights Committee condemns missile attacks, calls for providing security to Camp Liberty

Statement by Dr. Rula al-Hroob, Chairwoman of Freedoms and Human Rights Committee of Jordan’s Parliament

On 29 October 2015, in a deadly missile attack on Camp Liberty perpetrated by Iranian regime clients in the government and security forces of Iraq, 24 residents were killed and hundreds injured while large sections of the Camp partially to totally destroyed. This criminal act was carried out in one of the most protected areas of Baghdad near the International Airport and deployment of U.S. forces in Baghdad, and thus was impossible to penetrate without cooperation from the Iraqi governmental and security apparatus.
A year and half following the removal of Maliki, Camp Liberty’s file is still in the hands of Faleh Fayyad, a well-known agent of the Iranian regime who, along with others managing the camp, have been directly involved in the massacres in Ashraf and Liberty in the past seven years.
Despite many international calls, government of Iraq continues to dodge its responsibilities vis-à-vis Liberty residents. It has not provided the minimum security for them nor has it initiated any investigations.
Following the missile attacks, the Iraqi forces not only did not facilitate measures to normalize the conditions in the camp, but prevented entry of food, fuel and basic needs to the camp and did not allow sewage tankers to enter the camp.
Therefore, we urge our own government, the United Nations, the U.S. government, and the United Nations to oblige the Iraqi government to live up to its responsibilities regarding the security and safety of the residents and to investigate the missile attack of October 29. Moreover, we resolutely demand the following for provision of security and the wellbeing of Camp Liberty residents:
A. Designation of Camp Liberty as a refugee camp under UNHCR supervision to guarantee the security of the residents by the United Nations;
B. To immediately provide all needs of Camp Liberty residents after the missile attack and to bring the living standard of the residents to a decent and acceptable level;
C. Removing Camp Liberty dossier from the authority of Faleh Fayyad and replacing camp’s management with individuals not linked or associated to the Iranian regime;
D. Facilitating the sale of residents’ properties in Ashraf or reimbursing them for that property so that they can cover their living and transit expenses.
