Mayor Piero Tossino of the city of Torino, Italy, along with 19 members of the city council issued a call to the United Nations and US government for the protection of Camp Ashraf residents.
“The Iranian regime, facing the threat of popular uprisings for democratic change, is plotting against Ashraf residents and this is while the United Nations, European Parliament and Amnesty International have time and again condemned the Iranian regime for imposing crackdown and repressive measures.
“Ashraf residents, 3400 Iranian regime dissidents including 1,000 women, are unarmed and defenseless refugees and considered ‘protected persons’ under the Fourth Geneva Convention and other international humanitarian laws.
“The attacks by Iraqi forces on July 28-29, 2009 and April 8th, 2011 that led to 47 residents killed and hundreds of others wounded were condemned by Amnesty International, the International Federation for Human Rights, World Organization Against Torture and thousands of international political dignitaries.
“We call on the UN Secretary General, High Commissioner for Human Rights and High Commissioner for Refugees to permanently station a UNAMI team at site for the protection of Ashraf residents.
“We call on the European Union and Baroness Catherine Ashton to condition financial aid to the Iraqi government on respecting international laws and Ashraf residents’ rights.
“We further call on the US government and the UN to responsibly protect Ashraf residents, and by placing pressure on the Iraqi government lift the inhumane siege against Camp Ashraf.”
