Iraqi jurist organization calls on UN, EU to assign new grace period for Camp Ashraf residents

Al-Fajr weekly, Egypt, 26 Oct 2011 – Various sectors of the Iraqi society expressed their strict opposition to Prime Minister Nouri Maliki’s deadline to expel Camp Ashraf residents from Iraq at the end of the year, describing this (deliberate deadline) set by the government as a measure to carry out a new killing spree in the camp.
“Due to the regional and international conditions, this grace period – with less than two months remaining – does not provide ample time to resolve the dilemma of this camp’s residents,” the President of the Association of Iraqi Jurists said in his remarks.
“If we consider the legal status of this camp’s residents,” he explained, “we will see that they hold a correct legal status and there is no doubt that various political parties are pursuing foreign objectives and agendas that is behind the government’s decision to have them expelled.”
“The government has not followed up the issue of this camp from a legal perspective, he continued. “In fact, it has only taken the political aspect of this issue into consideration, meaning the government’s behavior has been in violation of international laws.”
Furthermore, he called on the Spanish National Court to take into process the case summoning Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki on the charge of war crimes against Camp Ashraf residents.”
Eighty five Iraqi MPs issued an official request to the Iraqi Parliament Presiding Board calling for Camp Ashraf to be placed under United Nations protection to guarantee the implementation of international standards regarding the residents.
