Iraqi dignitaries issue statement in support of Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights

Iraqi national figures and tribal sheikhs issued a statement in support of Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights, calling on the United Nations and United States to execute their commitments and impose Maliki’s government to end its inhumane treatment of the residents.

Sheikh Meshhan Abbas Mohammad al-Jassam – General Sheikh of Iraq’s al-Jumaila Tribe

Ashraf residents announcing their readiness for the departure of the sixth convoy and transfer of 400 people from Ashraf to Liberty is a brave plan to exit the current deadlock facing the peaceful solution. This impasse was caused by continuous violations of agreements and international accords by the Iraqi government, and due to the biased conduct of the UN’s special representative. The People’s Mojahedin of Iran have shown their good faith in this cause and it is time for the US government to carry out its legal, humanitarian and moral responsibilities vis-à-vis the Ashraf and Liberty residents. This includes executing the US court ruling and delisting the PMOI, and enforcing the Iraqi government to respect the residents’ human rights.

Abdussalam al-Azzawi – Iraqi National Accord Representative in Diyala Province

Despite signing agreements with the UN on Ashraf, the Iraqi government through its actions and stubborn positions is having a negative influence on the implementation of these very agreements.
The US, which claims to protect human rights and freedoms, must impel the Iraqi government to end this situation and its inhumane behaviors.

Methal al-Alousi – Iraqi Umma Party Secretary General

Ashraf and Liberty residents, similar to those fighting in Syria, are struggling to establish freedom and justice in Iran. Therefore, they deserve our gratitude and respect.
The Iraqi government is effectively unable to implement its own will regarding issues related to the Iranian regime and those planned by this regime. This policy does not reflect the Iraqi people’s viewpoint and one cannot remain silent against the Iraqi government’s inhumane pressures against those struggling for freedom for Iran and Syria.

Latif Mustafa Amin – Iraqi MP, member of the Parliament Legal Commission

The Iraqi government must be bound to international conventions and customs regarding refugees’ rights, and the Iraqi Constitution. This said, the government must practice adequate conduct towards Ashraf and Liberty residents.
According to these obligations, the Iraqi government is indebted to ensure security and humane dignity for Ashraf and Liberty residents.
