Iraqi Committee in Defense of Ashraf urged Iraqi government for immediate lift of Ashraf siege

The Iraqi Committee in Defense of Ashraf consisting of 104 political, academic, and tribal personalities released a statement and called the intensification of Ashraf siege by the Iraqi forces an illegal measure and a prelude to a human catastrophe.
Part of the statement reads:

After three months of illegal siege and imposing cumbersome pressures and limitations on 3500 Ashraf residents, and while thousands of parliamentarians and political and human rights personalities and organizations have asked for immediate lifting of the siege and respecting of the rights of these political refugees, on Thursday morning, May 28, in a shocking measure, a great number of Iraqi police force intensified the camp siege without a least justifiable and legal reason, a measure that could seriously endanger protection and safety of Ashraf residents who are all “protected persons” under international conventions.
The Iraqi Committee in Defense of Ashraf, in light of the obvious threats that such an assault poses and underscoring that the Iraqi government has acknowledged none of the basic rights of Ashraf residents, particularly the content of the European Parliament resolution titled as ” Humanitarian situation of Camp Ashraf Residents”, while urging the Iraqi government to remove the police forces from Camp Ashraf and immediate lift of its siege, we remind that should the government defy its commitment to the resolution refrain from implementing it and continue to violate Ashraf residents’ rights, the only solution would inevitably be to ask for international guarantees of Ashraf protection.
