The International Committee of NGOs in Defense of Ashraf calls on UN chief to take action on Ashraf called on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to intervene in the situation of Camp Ashraf and the welfare of its residents.
Excerpts are as follows:
Our information tells us that the government of Iraq intends to prevent the 400 residents from taking their personal belongings and their cars to the new location. Such measures will surely convert the new place to a prison for the 400 residents; which is greatly troubling. Any relocation under such conditions would be deemed as a forcible relocation transferring them to the prison, which is inconsistent with international laws. Possession of property is a right for the residents and they should not be pushed into a situation to be treated as prisoners.
Upon signing the agreement between UNAMI and the government of Iraq, the UN, too, breach their commitment to involve the residents of Camp Ashraf in negotiations regarding their relocation and fate. Under these circumstances the security situation of Camp Ashraf’s residents is extremely critical.
The UN has an obligation to furnish the minimum requirements demanded by the Ashraf residents. We point out that, upon signing this agreement with the Iraqi government, the UN become responsible for the Ashraf residents’ body and soul and will be found complicit in the event of any bloodshed of them.
We urge you to use the full extent of your authority in accepting the demands of Ashraf residents, since these residents have already gone beyond expectations in showing restraint and cooperativeness in order to reach a peaceful solution.
