A statement issued by the Association of Iraqi Physicians and College Students for Human Rights in Iraq, and an Iraqi MP from the Kurdistan coalition, stressed on the need for Maliki’s government to respect Liberty residents’ rights and abide by international conventions.
The association described the measures taking place against Ashraf and Liberty residents as flagrant violations of international conventions and human rights principles, adding these immoral actions must come to an end and the Iraqi government should abide by its moral and humanitarian obligations.
International laws and conventions recognize personal and group ownership rights and Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights bans depriving individuals of this right and stealing their property, the statement added.
The US government should intervene in this case and thwart human rights violations against Ashraf and Liberty residents, the statement concluded.
Iraqi MP Qassem Mohammad Qassem from the Kurdish coalition called for Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights to be respected.
“The Iraqi government must respect international laws and conventions on the issue of Ashraf and Liberty residents, and abide by international human rights standards,” he said.
