Dear Madame Secretary,
We are alarmed to hear that last morning forces from the Iraqi police have raided Camp Ashraf where about 3.400 members of the Iranian opposition have their refugee base. This was an unlawful, suppressive and arbitrary act carried out according to the agreement between Iran and Iraq saying that Ashraf has to be closed and its residents forcibly moved regardless of their protection according to the Geneva convention and Iraqs promise to the US to follow its contents. This obligation they have given last December to the US.
Iraq has refused to acknowledge the rights of the inhabitants of Ashraf and have harassed them in different ways since February this year. On 24 April the European Parliament adopted a resolution where they urged the Iraqi government to respect the rights of the residents of Ashraf.
Today’s suppressive actions coincide with the dirty campaign from Iran. Their main purpose seem to be a backing of the present president in being re- appointed.
Via Iraq, Iran is trying to bring about a humanitarian catastrophe at Ashraf. Therefore an intervention from the US is imperative both to prevent the entry of Iraqi police forces inside Ashraf and to stop the oncoming crisis.
Since Iraq has proven that it neither has the necessary independence nor the will to follow the Geneva conventions and the agreements with the US. We see no other solutions than that the US forces under monitors of the UN take over the protection of the Ashraf refugees.
From the Swedish Branch of FOFI we ask for your very urgent attention and response. Thank you in advance for your help.
Lennart Fridén, President of FOFI Sweden,
former MP of the Swedish Parliament
