Reuters, Strasbourg, December 17, 2008 — A group of members of the European Parliamentarians has asked to Nicolas Sarkozy to enforce a decision of justice cancelling the registration of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) on the European list of terrorist organizations. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, conservative spanish and vice-president of the European Parliament, sent a letter to this effect to the French President, who chairs the EU right up to the end of the year.
“As European legislators, we urge the EU Council of Ministers to formally recognize that judgment and to accept the application”, can we read in this text made public Wednesday in Strasbourg.
“The maintenance of PMOI in this list, not only has not led the mullahs to review their nuclear policy, but has encouraged them to disobey to requests of the international community”, added the hon. member, who claims to speak on behalf of a group of 2.000 national and European parliamentarians.
The court of first instance of the European Court of justice has canceled the 4 December last year the inclusion of PMOI on the list of terrorist organizations established by the European Union, in considering that the organization had not benefited from means to defend themselves.
This registration has particular, the consequent a freeze of assets of the organization, but it must be a unanimous decision of the twenty-seven to delete, what refuse several countries.
