Al-Malaf Website, 23 October 2010
On 17 October, 2010, a conference, with the attendance of sheikhs and prominent provincial figures, was held in the City of Baquba in the Diyala Province of Iraq with the goal of establishing a legal organization in Diyala. In this conference, human rights in Diyala and the tyrannous blockade on Camp Ashraf, which is home to near 3500 Iranian refugees, as a flagrant violation of human rights, was analyzed.
Lawyer Rashid Hamoud al-Taei, member of the “al-Rahman” human rights organization, condemned the tyrannous blockade on Ashraf and called for its abolishment.
Sheikh Abdullah Hussein Alwan (The Sheikh of the al-Azzi tribe) acknowledged the blockade on Ashraf as a clear case of violation of human rights in Diyala and underscored that the continuation of this blockade is unacceptable for the people of Diyala.
The last speaker of this conference was Mehdi Khalil al-Bayati who emphasized that the blockade on Ashraf is an inhumane act that is discordant with all Arabic manners and values.
The participants in this conference also called on the necessity for the UN to protect Ashraf, the lift of the blockade on Ashraf and the attainment of the residents to basic necessities and public services, especially medical services.
The participants also invited local authorities to not enforce pressure on guests of this province in Ashraf and requested that a permanent UNAMI monitoring team to be stationed in Ashraf.
In this conference, which lasted for 2 hours, a film of the violation of human rights in Iraq and the attacks of Iraqi forces on Ashraf residents on July 28-29, 2009 were showed.
