In a conference held in Berlin on March 7th, 2012, prominent German political dignitaries called for support for the residents in camps Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq who are facing serious threats.
Excerpts of various speeches delivered at this conference are as follows:
Rita Sussmouth – Former Speaker of the German Parliament
We are all aware that the women’s rights conditions in Iran are horrifying. And torture exists in large dimensions, in a matter that we can say what you have endured in Iran and especially in Ashraf, makes one truly think and words cannot describe our feelings.
Jurgen Krubug – German Deputy Foreign Minister (2001-2005)
Iraqi police is under the influence of Iranian regime, and instead of providing protection for refugees, it is conducting espionage activities. Maliki is willing to sacrifice human beings for the consent of the Iranian regime. We are not permitted to forego Maliki of his responsibilities and we must condition our bilateral relation with Iraq on this subject.
Christian Zimmerman – Chair of Berlin Human Rights Office
Mr. Kobler is not only the UN Special Representative, he is also a German citizen and he must respect German law in whatever action he carries out. In the German penal codes, there is a penal law of nations. And I as a human rights activities will promise him right here in Berlin: Mr. Kobler, we will not only monitor to just warn you. We will register all the events there and you are accountable! You are making deals there. You must place your efforts so that no human being will be harmed. And you also can take action for our federal government to do something.
Dr. Otto Bernhardt, prominent politician from the ruling Christian Democrat Party and head of the German Committee for a Free Iran
The message of this conference is that 3,000 people are still in Camp Ashraf, and those who have stationed in Camp Liberty should know that they are not alone.
