Perth Now Website, 12 Feb 2013 – AUSTRALIA has condemned a rocket and mortar attack on Iranian refugees in Iraq, describing it as “barbaric”.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has joined United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other world leaders in denouncing the attack on Camp Liberty – near Baghdad’s international airport – that killed at least six people and wounded 40 more at the weekend.
“This was a barbaric attack,” Senator Carr said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Iraqi government had a responsibility to ensure the safety of camp residents, he said.
“Australia calls on the government of Iraq to fulfil these responsibilities and to do all in its power to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The camp houses members of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), the militant wing of an Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran.
