Senior Iraqiya Coalition member Dr. Zafer al-Ani announced the Iraqi government and the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Iraq Martin Kobler are responsible for the transfer of 400 Iranian refugees to Camp Liberty, which lacks any basic living necessities.
“Reports, images and documents obtained on the conditions of Camp Liberty indicate that the site cannot be described other than a detention center that lacks even the basic living necessities, and one cannot transfer a group of people who are asylum seekers there,” Dr. Zafer al-Ani announced in a press release.
“Reports and statements issued by impartial international organizations and delegations stress that Liberty in its current conditions is not adequate for such a responsibility,” he said, adding “and I see that the UN, and specifically the head of its representing delegation in Iraq Martin Kobler has a large part of the responsibility in this regard because he is providing misleading reports to the UN and the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran and also the international community on the conditions in Liberty. It appears that Kobler has an inimical stance against these Iranian refugees and this status quo raises various questions.”
“US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is another party having political and moral responsibility on this issue because she has given a guarantee on the subject of providing adequate living necessities for these refugees, and promised to follow up on their conditions,” al-Ani continued. “This is shameful that the Iraqi government treats a few hundred refugees in such a manner and presents a negative example of handling refugees. This subject is under the influence of political considerations regarding relations between the ruling parties and Tehran’s government which results in us feeling the transfer of these Iranian refugees to Liberty was for their political annihilation.”
