Call on UN, US government for urgent action to improve conditions in Liberty and Iraqi armed forces fully evacuating the camp
Over 280 Egyptian MPs strongly condemned rights violations against Ashraf-Liberty residents and any type of forcible relocation
In a conference held at the invitation of the Egyptian Bar Association in Cairo’s al-Safir Hotel, a statement issued by the majority of Egyptian MPs in support of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran and Ashraf-Liberty residents was declared. Many journalists and representatives of various media outlets took part in this conference.
The text of the statement signed by over 280 Egyptian MPs is as follows:
Statement – Majority of Egyptian Parliament
Camp Liberty must be recognized as refugee camp
With the utmost regret, we are following the events in relation to Ashraf residents and the forceful relocation of a percentage of them to the camp so-called Liberty. And we are especially aware that the Iraqi government’s repressive measures against Ashraf residents, leading to their transfer to Camp Liberty, were nothing but an Iranian regime political plan.
Despite the fact Ashraf residents have shown much cooperation and good faith to facilitate the international community’s missions and efforts, the commitments of other parties remain unfulfilled.
This is while the United Nations Security Council evaluated the issue of Ashraf in its April session, and by stressing on the Iraqi government’s responsibility to ensure Ashraf residents security and well-being, demonstrated the international community’s concerns on respect for the rights of Ashraf residents, who have lived in Iraq for the past 25 years and are now being relocated in an inhumane manner from their residence.

Furthermore, Camp Liberty is under an all-out siege by security armed and armored forces in order to gain the Iranian regime’s consent. The residents, including hundreds of Muslim women, are being threatened by these forces.
The absence of service infrastructures and especially the most vital issue, being water; the Iraqi government not allowing the very necessary needs to be procured by the residents at their own expense; the inhumane measure of preventing the transfer of special equipment for the ill in Liberty at the beginning of the summer season; and while Camp Liberty is not linked to Iraq’s nationwide electricity grid, preventing the transfer of Ashraf’s power generators to Liberty to provide electricity; imposing various types of pressures on the camp residents, all display the devious intentions of the Iranian regime’s elements in Iraq in this transfer process.

Due to the fact that Ashraf residents relocated to Camp Liberty based on guarantees provided by the UN, we the signatories of this statement with the utmost concern call on the UN Secretary-General and United Nations organizations for the following demands:
1. We call on the UNHCR to recognize Camp Liberty as a refugee camp to provide international protection for Liberty residents against the criminal measures of the Iranian regime and its elements.
2. Iraqi armored units and armed forces must be transferred outside of the camp.
3. Any kind of negotiations with the dictatorship ruling Iran on the dossier of Ashraf and Liberty is illegal and unacceptable, and is a flagrant violation of many international laws and pacts.
4. As the UNHCR has announced, Liberty residents have the right to access to lawyers, dignitaries and their family members, and the right to freedom of movement outside of the camp.
5. Ashraf residents have the right to transfer their moveable belongings in order to provide for their needs in Liberty, and sell their immovable assets in a properly fashion to provide for their expenses.
