British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom sent a letter to the MNF-I commander and emphasized the necessity to guarantee Ashraf protection by the US forces. Part of the letter signed by Lord Corbett to Gen. Petraeus reads:
“Transfer of the protection of the residents of Ashraf to Iraqi security forces, who are known to have been infiltrated by the Iranian regime’s agents, would invite a humanitarian disaster. There is little doubt that the demands by the Iraqi government to take control of Ashraf are the result of pressures put on it by Tehran, which views the PMOI as a threat and a major impediment to its designs on Iraq.
Generals Geoffrey Miller, William Brandenburg and John Gardner, in 2004, 2005 and 2006 respectively reaffirmed that the United States is committed to the protection of the residents of Camp Ashraf. In my view, the United States remains under obligation to maintain that protection because in the absence of such protection, the lives and liberties of those in Ashraf would be at great risk.
I should be grateful if you would allay the concerns of our Committee by reaffirming that the Multi-National Force-Iraq will continue to provide protection for the residents of Ashraf so long as U.S. forces are present in Iraq.
I very much look forward to hearing from you on what is an extremely serious matter to that majority of Members of Parliament and about 200 Peers in the House of Lords who support the Iranian Resistance.”
