A TORY MP has given his support to the opposition movement in Iran.

Southend West Conservative MP David Amess made a speech at a rally outside Downing Street backing the National Council of Resistance of Iran.

He urged the UK Government to support the opposition to the “brutal” Iranian regime.

Mr Amess called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to offer more support to those opposing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

He said: “This option of democratic change by the Iranian people has long been advocated by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the largest opposition group in exile, and its president Maryam Rajavi.

The people of Iran have now put this option on the map for dealing with the threat posed by the current Iranian regime.

“Unfortunately, the Iranian people’s calls for democracy and freedom have fallen on deaf ears at Whitehall, where this Government continues in its inept and dangerous attempts to appease a regime which massacres its own people.”
