Belgian Committee of friends for a democratic Iran asked for US intervention to end Ashraf blockade

The Belgian Committee of friends for a democratic Iran consisting of Belgian Senators and Parliamentarians, in a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, protested prevention of entry of food and basic needs to Ashraf city by Iraqi forces and asked for her intervention to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe there.
The text of the letter is as follows:

Hon. Hillary Clinton
Secretary of State,
United States of America
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Washington, DC 20520
July 1, 2009

Dear Mrs Clinton,
In recent days, Iraqi police forces stationed at the gates of Camp Ashraf, home to several thousand members of the main Iranian opposition, PMOI, in the Dialya province of Iraq, have denied entry to food and other supplies to the camp. According to reports, at least 9 food trucks have been turned away in the past few days.
After three decades of PMOI’s persistence and steadfastness, now the Iranian society is raising up in protests, and what was initiated by massive fraud in the sham presidential elections, rapidly turned into nationwide protest against the entirety of the repressive system.
It is maybe for that reason that the Iranian regime once again has put it bets on eliminating its main source of concern: the residents of Camp Ashraf that it blames for all the trouble it faces inside Iran.
The US plays an important role in this dilemma: Six years ago, it asked the PMOI to disarm in return for US protection. PMOI did so and signed a mutual agreement with the US forces on the ground.
Now the US should not just play a passive role when such inhuman restrictions are imposed on Ashraf. Therefore, on behalf of the Belgian Committee of Friends for a Democratic Iran which includes members of both the Chamber and the Senate of the Belgian federal Parliament from different political parties, I would like to call for your personal intervention to stop what increasingly seems to be heading to a human catastrophe.
The day before yesterday, a senior Iraqi member of the pro-Iran “Islamic Supreme Council” told the Iranian news agency ISNA that “from tomorrow (June 30) Americans will not be able to even monitor the situation in Ashraf and the Iraqi government will have full control.”
I also take this opportunity to remind that Europe has an official policy when it comes to Camp Ashraf. In a resolution adopted in April 24th 2009, the European Parliament called for the Iraqi government to fully respect the rights of Ashraf’s residents and end its blockade immediately.
We hope that the US as the only observing force with troops on ground would take necessary action at this stage and end this inhuman blockade and intimidations of Ashraf’s residents by Iranian regimes protégés in Iraq. This would also send an encouraging message to the new Iran that is arising in the horizon.
Yours sincerely,
Senator Dirk Claes,
Chairman of Belgian Committee of friends for a democratic Iran
