To confront the Khamenei-Maliki conspiracy and the inhumane pressures of the ‘Suppression Committee’ against the Mojahedin of Ashraf, the Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf called for the immediate and permanent stationing of a UNAMI team (UN Assistance Mission in Iraq) in Camp Ashraf.
“The residents of Ashraf are unarmed individuals whose rights, under international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention, must not be violated”, said Mahmoud al-Kharabsheh, Jurist and MP from Jordan and head of the Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf in an interview with Iraq’s al-Babeliya TV from Amman. “Yet the residents of Ashraf are facing much aggression, and also Iraqi forces and individuals who receive their orders from the Iranian regime are going the limits to violate their rights”.
“Currently, Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki is scheduled to visit Iran,” added the head of the Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf. “The goal of this trip is to gain further support from the Iranian regime for a second term as PM. The aggressive efforts currently underway against Ashraf are in the framework of a political deal and Maliki’s visit to Iran. Therefore, this matter is in violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions, and those who are ‘protected’ must not be subject to political deals and ambitions. They are to enjoy protection under international laws, and UN Security Council resolutions and ratifications.”
On behalf of the Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf, Mahmoud al-Kharabsheh, Jurist and MP from Jordan, went on to say: “Human rights organizations, international bodies, the UN and Security Council, and all organizations defending human rights are required to intervene in this matter. Also, US forces that are still present in Iraq and have the responsibility to secure ‘protected persons’ in Ashraf must intervene. Therefore, under no circumstance must they be placed in the middle of deals between the Iranian regime and the Iraqi government and become a part of Nouri Maliki’s bargain with the Iranian regime for his second term as PM.”
“As ‘protected persons’, the rights of the Mojahedin in Ashraf must be respected, and they must not be placed in a status of concern about their safety and security,” he emphasized.
