In an international call regarding protection of Ashraf residents, Amnesty International (AI) urged all its members to rise for support of Ashraf residents who are protected persons under the international law and by writing letter to the MNF-I Commander, remind the U.S. and Iraqi governments of their obligations based on the International Law.
The text of Amnesty International call is as follows:
ACTION REQUEST FOR ALL AI MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS
IRANIAN SUPPORTERS OF PMOI IN IRAQ FACE THREAT OF FORCED REPATRIATION
Members of an Iranian community in Iraq face possible forced return to Iran, where they would be at grave risk of torture and other human rights violations. These are people connected to the People’s Mojahadeen Organization of Iran (PMOI), an Iranian opposition group living in Camp Ashraf, not far from the Iranian border, who are considered “protected persons” under international humanitarian law. AI has written to the Iraqi and US governments, reminding them of their obligations under international law and urging them to continue to provide protection to those affiliated with the PMOI.
AI members are encouraged to write courteously worded letters or e-mails to:

General Raymond T. Odierno
Commander, Multi-National Corps-Iraq

Dear General Odierno:
I write to you because of my deep concern for the fate of a group of Iranians living in Ashraf, Diyala province, in Iraq.
It is my understanding that this community faces a dangerous threat of possible forced deportation to Iran. Members of the People’s Mujahadeen Organization of Iran living in Camp Ashraf have been designated as “protected persons” under Article 27 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prevents their extradition or forced repatriation to Iran. If the individuals and families of Camp Ashraf were returned to Iran against their will, they would be at grave risk of torture and other serious human rights violations.
The US and Iraqi governments should work together with relevant UN agencies to find a durable solution for the Camp Ashraf people. I ask that you use your command and your good offices with the Iraqi authorities to guarantee protection for the residents of Camp Ashraf, and ensure that no Iranian refugees or asylum seekers are forced to return to Iran or handed over to the Iranian authorities.
I respectfully request the favor of your reply regarding this matter.
I thank you for your attention to this and for all your service.
