Madrid Actualidad Website, 9 Feb 2013 – In a missile attack against a US military base named Camp Liberty near Baghdad airport, currently an Iranian dissident camp, six people were killed and 100 wounded. The origin of this deadly attack remains unknown.
3,100 Iranian refugees are currently living in this site and many of them are members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization (a group opposing Iran’s clerical regime) and it has been over a year since they were transferred to Liberty after departing Camp Ashraf. In comparison to the prior camp, Liberty is 80 times smaller and has no shelters.
After learning of this incident, Jose Maria Chiquillo, Popular Party spokesperson in Spanish Senate Foreign Relations Committee, condemned “Liberty’s inhumane conditions, inadequate protection and lack of any progress in the residents’ resettlement to third countries.” Chiquillo also demanded the residents be returned to Ashraf.
“From a humanitarian, legal and moral viewpoint, the European Union, United States and United Nations must guarantee protection of these defenseless refugees,” he added. “An independent investigation must take place on this morning’s massacre. Those responsible of this outrageous terrorist act must be found and brought to justice.”
