While Ashraf residents have proven their goodwill, the Iraqi government has not at all acted according to the MOU signed with the UN
The US and UN must prevent the Iraqi government from carrying out repressive measures against Ashraf and Liberty residents
Fifty thousand MPs, high-profile political, cultural and literature figures, writers and journalists, judges and lawyers, university professors, physicians and engineers from 13 Arab countries including Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Morocco and Kuwait signed a statement announcing their support for Ashraf and Liberty residents.
The signatories include: 420 party leaders, human rights organization officials, society heads and high-profile political, cultural and literature figures; 1,527 writers and journalists; 1,433 judges and lawyers, 847 university professors and physicians; 1,259 engineers, 101 preachers and clerics and 31 regional officials. 2,198 freedom-loving Arab women are also among the signatories of this statement.
Statement in support of Ashraf and Liberty residents
In its April 2011 session, the United Nations Security Council discussed the conditions of Ashraf residents who have been transferred to Camp Liberty after pressures imposed by the Iraqi government. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his report to the UNSC expressed his concerns and described the Iraqi government as the main party responsible for their well-being.
Ashraf and Liberty residents remain in dangerous and sensitive conditions. Besieged by internal and external crises, the Iranian regime is attempting to annihilate its organized opposition before Bashar Assad’s overthrow in Syria. Maliki’s government, owing its existence to the Iranian regime’s support, is implementing Tehran’s demands on its behalf in cracking down on Ashraf and Liberty residents.
While Ashraf residents have proven their goodwill, the Iraqi government has not in any way lived up to its Memorandum of Understanding signed with the UN.
Considering the lack of humanitarian and human rights standards in Liberty, and since Ashraf residents were transferred to Camp Liberty with assurances provided by the UN:
1. The US and UN Secretary-General must prevent the Iraqi government from imposing repressive measures against Ashraf and Liberty residents.
2. Ashraf residents must be able to transfer their property and moveable assets to provide for their needs in Liberty, and sell in a proper manner whatever they cannot transfer.
