Belgian mayors Statement on Ashraf and Liberty
3400 Iranian refugees, the most important dissidents of the Iranian regime who seek peace and democracy in their country and have lived in Ashraf for many years, accepted a peaceful solution for their transfer to Camp Liberty near Baghdad. However, Liberty falls short of minimum international standards.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has described this camp as a prison due to the fact that 3400 individuals must live in a half a kilometer squared perimeter, and this small camp is surrounded by tall concrete walls and Iraqi armed units. The residents also have no freedom of movement or any access to their lawyers. This camp faces serious shortages in drinking water and electricity.
We are very concerned of these conditions and condemn the rights violations of Iranian dissidents in camps Ashraf and Liberty.
We call on the United Nations to take immediate action to improve the conditions in Camp Liberty, including armed forces evacuating the camp, allowing construction and providing humanitarian necessities especially for the ill.
We call on the Belgian government to actively support the rights of these refugees.
