101 Iraqi MPs call on UN Secretary General to insure rights of Ashraf and Liberty residents

One hundred and one Members of the Iraqi Parliament issued a call to the UN Secretary General regarding the commitments of the UN, US and Iraqi Government in insuring the rights of camp Ashraf and Liberty residents.

Readiness for commence of next convoy to Liberty is an act of good-will that should be acknowledged and recompensed by the Iraqi Government through implementing its commitments and by the US through delisting.

August 24, 2012

Mr. Ban Ki-moon UN Secretary General,

We acknowledge the act of good-will by Camp Ashraf residents in moving another convoy to Liberty as a great help to the peaceful and humanitarian solution for the Ashraf case, which must be acknowledged and recompensed by the Iraqi Government through implementing its commitments and by the US through delisting this movement, thus opening the path for a humane and biased approach towards these refugees.

We believe that any use of violence against them will only deepen the political crisis in Iraq.

The July 19, 2012 remarks of the UN Secretary General Special Representative in the Security Council, and also the remarks of the Maliki government’s National Security Advisor, in threatening the Ashraf residents, are truly concerning.

Neglecting the minimum humanitarian requests of the residents, including prohibition from transferring their belongings, questions the motives behind this relocation, since failing to provide their humanitarian needs and tormenting them are carried out in an attempt to appease regional political sides and seriously contradicts a peaceful solution.

In such circumstances, we call for your urgent intervention to prevent a new humanitarian catastrophe. Appointing a personal representative for camp Ashraf and Liberty residents can play an important role in seeking a mutual agreed solution; facilitating the implementation of UN responsibilities; and guaranteeing the neutrality of UNAMI vis-à-vis political pressures.

We are ready to cooperate in seeking a peaceful solution for this humanitarian dossier and to assist an international effort in this regard. We are also ready to visit Camp Liberty and play a monitoring role.
