NEW YORK (AP) – The U.S. government has announced a system to compensate anyone harmed by Sudan, Iran and Cuba, using some of $8.9 billion forfeited by France’s largest bank in a plea deal.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Goldstein revealed the plan at Friday’s New York sentencing of BNP Paribas. The bank pleaded guilty last year to violating U.S. economic sanctions by processing transactions for clients in blacklisted countries.
As part of its plea, the bank agreed to the forfeiture and to pay a $140 million fine. It also pleaded guilty to state charges.
