US officials show move for new UN sanctions on Iran after IAEA report bolstered case

US officials took indicative concern over IAEA report on Iranian atomic program as French news agency (AFP) reported the following account on Feb. 22.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday there is “a very strong case” for moving forward with a third UN Security Council resolution against Iran for its nuclear program, “There is a very strong case for moving forward on the Security Council resolution,” Rice told a press conference following a new International Atomic Energy report on Iran.

The State Department’s number three Nicholas Burns said foreign ministry officials of the six — the five UN Security Council permanent members plus Germany — would review a proposed third UN sanctions resolution against Iran.
“We will review our strategy (launched at the United Nations) in New York, the pace of the resolution,” Burns told reporters.

The US ambassador to the UN said on Friday that the latest report by the UN nuclear watchdog on Iran’s suspect atomic program is providing ammunition for adoption of new UN sanctions against Tehran next week.
“Some were hoping the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) report would eliminate the need for the next (Security Council) resolution,” Zalmay Khalilzad told a press luncheon at UN.
Khalilzad said the IAEA report showed that the Iranians “did not come clean” and that there were a number of things “that were quite disturbing” with respect to their past nuclear activities. He said the full council was likely to hold consultations next Wednesday and to schedule a vote on the text next Friday on first of March.
