Mohammad Hashemi Isfahani, one of the men involved in the US embassy hostage taking back in 1979 in Tehran and an official in the current government admitted that the so called “Students of the line of Imam”, which were the students involved in the actual embassy takeover and hostage takings which lasted 444 days reported the raid on the embassy and the following events for the next year and half to Khomeini himself through his son, Ahmad Khomeini bit by bit. 
Hashemi Isfahani also revealed that the aim in this hostage taking was to dismiss the government of moderate Prime Minister Bazargan and replace it with dedicated elements to Khomeini and the hardline clerics.
Bazargan’s government was overthrown a few days following the US embassy seizure in Tehran in 1979 and the way was paved for a hardline government to replace him and close all the gaps for the hardliners to rule Iran for next three decades.
