Transfer of 50 death row inmates from Qezelhesar to Evin Prison

Harana News Agency, 27 March 2011 – On Thursday, 24 March 2011, 50 inmates of Qezelhesar Prison located in the city of Karaj (west of Tehran) were transferred to Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison. It is said that these 50 prisoners are accused of starting a riot in Qezelhesar Prison. It appears that the officials have relocated these prisoners in order to have them executed in Evin.

It is worth noting in the clashes taking place between prison guards and inmates in Sections 2 and 3 of Qezelhesar Prison on 15 March 2011, 150 inmates suffered serious wounds especially due to the fact that prison guards resorted to using live bullets, resulting in at least 80 of those wounded to lose their lives. These clashes ignited when prison officials intended to carry out the execution of ten prisoners.

According to remarks made by the head of the Iranian regime’s Prisons Organization, Qezelhesar Prison with 20,000 inmates is the country’s largest prison. Around 13,000 Qezelhesar inmates are convicted of drug-related offences. It should be noted that following this killing spree, Amnesty International issued a deceleration finding necessary an immediate investigation and probe into this issue.
