If you analyze Iran’s intense response to the decision to revoke the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran from the US terrorist list, you will come to understand the great stature this organization has occupied in the mind of the Iranian regime.
Before the US State Department issued its decision to remove the name of the PMOI from the terrorist list, Iran was already suffering from many problems and crises threatening its very roots. However, the return of the PMOI to the scene of resistance against repression and autocracy will intensify the problems and crises against Iran and make them much more sophisticated in a manner that Iran will never be able to face these problems and even relatively resolve them. This is an issue the regime is emphasizing on in private gatherings.
We have not unveiled a secret if we say Iran placed all its weight behind efforts to prevent the removal of the PMOI from the US terrorist list, especially since this regime’s lobbies trekked every path and tried every method to bypass this decision and prevent it. However, the strong and firm reasons and evidence presented by the PMOI in US courts and various decision making bodies literally drew the carpet from underneath the feet of this regime and its lobbies. The PMOI took the initiative and this made the regime go frenzy. The Iranian people are no doubt following up on the removal of the PMOI from the terrorist list and this decision had a strong echo in their spirit and conscience. That is exactly why the regime is extremely concerned of the reflections and unprecedented effects of this decision against its very existence, effects that are in general in blatant contradiction with this regime’s security and stability. Therefore, it’s quite natural that this regime will resort to repressive measures for the next phase of this decision and attempt to confront it. However, this time the situation is completely different in comparison to the past, and the regime can no longer play the same previous role. It has no guarantee of gaining control over the situation if things head towards an uprising because the people’s will, optimism and hope following the PMOI delisting is very high, meaning doors have opened to this organization and it can speak its mind and the world can hear it.
Before this decision, Iran was lost in numerous complications and crises. This feeling of being lost will change into a staggering mode and place the regime on the verge of complete annihilation because the PMOI, which is very well known for the Iranian people and all those following the issues of Iran, will not just lay back satisfied of being revoked from the terrorist list. It will continue its struggle, delivering heavy political and intellectual blows that will shake the regime’s pillars, not letting go of this regime until it joins its predecessor, the Shah.
