The state-run ISNA news agency quoted Rouhani’s interior minister Abdul-Reza Rahmai Fazli saying that narcotics around the world is a $2,500 to $3,000 billion business, in Iran this is about $3 billion.
He announced that the number of drug addicts in Iran is 1,350,000 and said: If we multiple this number by the number of families, then 6 million people in our country are directly engaged with the drug problem.
He went on to say that the number of female drug addicts has doubled in the past four years. By pointing out that some 8 people die of narcotics use on a daily basis, he announced that some 3,000 people die of drug use every year.
