Mostafa Pour Mohammadi, Iran’s minister of justice said in response to a journalist asking, isn’t the cultural condition for the presence of women at sports facilities ready: First of all we have values and religious norms and we are sensitive about them and fortunately the general feeling of the society is completely positive meaning that the society’s expectation is that we as a religious establishment must uphold religious rules and our laws stem from religious rules. Then we have to see how much does our Sharia law allow the presence of women!” Regarding the issue that Iranian women were protesting to guest-fans being allowed in the stadium, he said: “They have no problems in regards to religion and there is no problem for sports. Why should we cause limitations for them? Anyway, they do not abide by some rules and we do.” (State-run ‘Etemad’ daily, June 25, 2014)
