NCRI – US President Barack Obama has been urged in a full page newspaper advertisement to cut aid and weapons sales to Iraq until the seven hostages taken captive during the Camp Ashraf massacre are released.
The letter in Wednesday’s New York Times and signed by 33 prominent US politicians and dignitaries also demanded that Mr Obama provide protection for the 3,000 Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty until they can be moved to safety outside Iraq.
It read: “Attempts to release the abducted refugees have been unsuccessful and their families and friends are living with the terror that the government of Iraq will extradict them to Iran for certain torture and execution.”
And it told Mr Obama that the 52 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) massacred during the Camp Ashraf atrocity were the victims of ’premeditated mass murder’ planned at the highest level by Iraqi forces and agents, and using equipment provided by the US.
It added: “Every murdered refugee carried an identification card designating them as a ’protected person’ by the United States government. It was quite simply a promise that has not been kept.”
The letter, sent to Mr Obama before his meeting with Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki earlier this month, also urged the president to use the meeting to secure the release of the seven Ashraf hostages, and compensate refugees for their lost property.
It continued: “We further urge you to accept the suggestion of Senator Menendez and suspend any aid or sale of arms to Iraq until these objectives are achieved.
“Most importantly we urge you to allow all of the Camp Liberty residents to be evacuated immediately from Iraq, using United States forces, and brought to safety in a United States government supported facility.”
Among the letter’s signatories were former presidential candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich, first U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former New York mayor Rudy Guiliani and former US Ambassador to the United nations John Bolton.
